In my attempt to gain more and more insight on the role of the DJ in Hip-Hop along with different views on where they stand in the game from various DJ’s I came across Hot 97 and Heavy Hitter DJ Big Ben and here is what the talented DJ had to say when I asked him the same exact questions as I had previously used with other DJ’s.

Produced by Just Blaze, Jay Electronica recently released his full commercial single “Exhibit C” now available on iTunes. Edited snippets of the song were circulating the airwaves these past couple of weeks creating much a buzz for the prominent yet elusive emcee. Jay who is popular for a number of things from impregnating Erykah Badu earlier this year to coming out of nowhere and working with hip-hop greats like Nas, Talib Kweli, and Mos Def, has been showing the world that he’s more than just an affiliate of the right circles but an immensely talented new force to be wrecking with. “Exhibit C” is to be featured on Jay’s upcoming not-quite a mixtape, not quite an album Act II: Patents Of Nobility (The Turn) due out on Christmas Day.

What is the deal with the hip-hop community and its lack of acceptance that some of its stars are or may be homosexual? For such a progressive community the only issue that seems to remain stagnant and unaddressed is that of homosexuality having its presence accepted in our culture. Hip-hop is for the most part homophobic as well as misogynistic and it’s sad that in today’s day and age that we as a whole have to remain in the same mindset as those from prior decades. What’s even funnier about this situation is that in the music and videos we see on television, the stereotypical alpha males in action with their braggadocios bravado and presentation of machismo essence however they wear skinny jeans that show off their asses and act as if this couldn’t be considered homosexual because they are so rough and tough. They forget that by them wearing their jeans that way is a reminder of prison culture where those who wanted to have sex with other male inmates would lower their pant’s to signify that they were willing and ready to participate in “homosexual” activities with one another. Isn’t that ironic? A “homosexual” activity being committed by people who are, for the most part homophobic.
