Far from the “Where Da Cash At” days, Curren$y Hot Spitta has adamantly found his niche in the world of Hip-Hop with his latest high-quality release, Pilot Talk. From the moment you hear the intro, “Example”, you know you’re in for an intoxicating marijuana-fueled ride so grab your lighter, buckle up, and hold on.
(more after the jump)
Comprised of 13 tracks, some potent and heavy-hitting, some cool and mellow, Pilot Talk in all its weed-laden glory is a well-put-together effort that was well worth the wait. Stand out tracks like “Audio Dope II”, “King Kong”, and the Stalley assisted “Address” make for easy listening all the way through while never breaking its stride.
Even the guests who show up to vibe with Spitta on a couple of tracks never take away from the album’s momentum or outshine the star of the show. On the brassy, pimpedelic “Seat Change” Snoop Dogg drops a little game while Mos Def and Jay Electronica appear on a breezy “The Day” and Devin The Dude holds down the Mary Jane-indulged “Chilled Coughphee”.
But the big name features aren’t the sole reasons to keep Pilot Talk in heavy rotation. It’s the live instrumentation in the production that blends perfectly with Curren$y’s laid-back Southern drawl that keeps you coming back for more. It’s funny to think that tales of money, weed, and girls over the prettiest piano chords, guitar riffs, and melodic strings could work but the blend is actually impeccable.
Yes, Ski Beatz really did his thing and with him taking the lead for most of the production throughout the album, Pilot Talk is liable to soothe the musical tastebuds of a vast array of listeners. From hardcore Hip-Hop heads to new age hipsters to neighborhood d-boys, the album has something for everyone without overtly trying to please anyone in particular.
Only fallback to Pilot Talk is its length which is around 45 minutes. You can probably give it about three spins back to back while running your daily errands but no matter how short, good music is good music, know?
Overall, Spitta just does him and proves that he’s able to hold down a full-length album with style and ease. A very solid and impressive effort from the New Orleans emcee, pick up your copy of Curren$y’s Pilot Talk today.
