Jay-Z, Will Smith, and Jada Pinkett-Smith have come together to use their star-power, pull, and hefty finances to bring the smash-hit play Fela! to the bright lights of Broadway. Initially an Off-Broadway play, Fela! is an elaborate stage production documenting the life and music of famed Nigerian musician, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and activist, Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

Fela is known for pioneering Afrobeat music, an eclectic blend of jazz, funk, African rhythm, and harmonies; music that has influenced hip-hop artists such as Common and Mos Def to both pay homage to the late Fela through song and incorporate his sound into their music. Jay, Will, and Jada’s decision to join in as producers was prompted by the persuasiveness of The Roots’ renowned drummer, Questlove, who was blown away by Fela! when it premiered as an Off-Broadway play. After a few months of convincing and deal-closing, Quest’s hard work paid off and the heavy-hitting trio backed Fela! sending it to Broadway and into the spotlight of rave reviews and critical acclaims.

Those unfamiliar with Fela’s work will still enjoy the extravagant stage show filled with amazing choreography by Tony Award winner, Bill T. Jones, and the exciting, revolutionary music from the legend that is Fela Kuti.
