I remember you coming out with the first
Wu & Friends [click for review] a few years back, and now you have the second volume. So what initially gave you the idea to start the series
?
Mathematics: I first started off by doing remixes, and then I wanted to do something a little bit different… So I had the joints, and the opportunity came up; and that’s what it was… It just all came together basically…
So that was all material that you’ve been sitting on?
Mathematics: Yeah, yeah, yeah… But some are newer than others…
Did you produce every track on the album?
Mathematics: Yeah, that’s correct… Every track on the is me…
For those that don’t know, how did you first even hook up with Wu-Tang Clan?
Mathematics: Back in the day, I started off by DJ’ing for GZA when he was on Cold Chillin [Records]… Knew RZA from back in the day too, but I didn’t know that they were cousins…
Do you have any memorable moments from being with the entire Wu?
Mathematics: There are so many, that tons of them pop up… One thing I miss though, is the energy that used to be in the studio… Right now, everyone has their own home studio, so you don’t get that vibe in the studio from how it used to be…
I remember when we made Chess Boxing… [Inspecktah] Deck when in the booth, and he killed it, U-God killed it, and I remember when [Old] Dirty got on; I was like, “This dude is crazy!” [Laughing]… I never expected it to be one of those tracks that everyone loved so much; you know what I mean?
So have you ever thought of producing for artists outside of the Wu?
Mathematics: Well, I’ve been pretty much in-house, but I was supposed to do a few things outside, but it just never happened… It because I also DJ on top of producing, and I DJ for Meth… All of that stuff keeps me busy, but I would definitely want to work with other people…
Are you going to be involved in the Wu-Massacre album with Ghost, Rae, and Meth?
Mathematics: Yeah… I think I have about four joints on there…
Can we expect to hear another Wu & Friends?
Mathematics: Yeah… Right now I’m working on a few different projects… So right now, I’ve just been shifting things over…
What do you say to the people that think the Wu-Tang Clan has lost a little bit of it steam over the years?
Mathematics: Well, first off I would disagree with that… Everybody is an MC nowadays, so sometimes a dude might not buy your CD because he’s too busy working on his CD… Right now the music industry is just really different but as far as losing steam; I’d just tell the people to keep listening…
