As he lifted the hand of misogyny and blasted the eye of broken cycles with shatteringly definitive force, Republicans everywhere breathed a sigh of relief that despite sexual hypocrisy, narcissism, and national corruption of economic livelihood, that they were provided yet another pointed finger at Hip-Hop for the single handed downfall of nuclear families and black male role models (“and he was one of the good ones – what a relief”).

And in our second act? The only remaining fear was that the community would allow the almost 3.5 million violent crimes committed against family members (49% of which are crimes against spouses according to the United States Department of Justice) to be heard and utilized as a teachable moment, thereby strengthening our depth of progression. But no, don’t worry, because in the truest sense of choreographed photo ops and idiocy, Dancing Diddy invited the lovebirds to his abode (or shall we say his good friend Rihanna’s haven of victimized hell). Thank you Diddy for being a complete and utter moron. As a result, reaction was shifted to starlet’s and Hollywood hubbub rather than the one in three adolescent girls in physically abusive relationships before graduating high school, or the destructive force of unhealthy love that keeps battered victims returning to their abusers nine times before finally leaving or dying.

In a time where African-American mothers of observant daughters continuously remind audiences to remember Chris Brown’s talent and youth (i.e. the Wendy Williams show 11/13/09) I wonder why we scatter to preserve a singing career rather than this young man’s pretty obvious mental instability and fractured emotional state. Theodore Kaczynski commenced studies at Harvard by age 16, completed his masters and PhD by 25, was a brilliant mathematician, persuasive political activist, and was arguably one of the most talented and brilliant minds the world has ever seen. Ted was also a master criminal known as the ‘Unabomber’ who carried out a campaign of mail bombings in order to, as he argued, attract attention to the erosion of human freedom necessitated by modern technologies requiring large-scale organizations. My point? Why are we discussing talent? Are abusers less justified if they do not have extraordinary aptitude or entertainment value? You are not helping ‘well she looks feisty’ sexists and ‘missing the entire point mothers’. Not all mothers of course, ‘cause my mamma knows what’s up and the way we see it, subjective ‘talent’ is the most irrelevant topic on the face of the planet in direct accordance or reaction to violent behavior. If real care were being administered to Chris Brown, or any other abuser for that matter, then temporarily falling back, counseling, discussion, and future prevention would have been first options moving forward, not Double Mint commercials and Funk Flex interviews.

Thank Jehovah Rihanna and Chris did those interviews on 20/20 respectively. Now maybe we can concentrate on the 1,200 women a year who die of domestic violence, the average 3.5 million children a year who witness domestic violence in their homes, and the remarkable transformations that can take place when a long-endured tragic world wide issue, represented via a mega figure of the mainstream Hip-Hop community, in her own time decides to sit down with Diane Sawyer and say ‘let’s really talk about it’.
