Add artist to the many hats that Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA wears being as he’s a rapper, producer, composer, actor, director, and author.
Recently, RZA has taken to the canvas to create his rendition of Emanuel Leutze’s “Washington Crossing the Delaware,” the famous painting which features General George Washington crossing the Delaware River with his band of mates rowing along into the sunrise while two courageous soldiers hold up the American flag behind him.
Wondering how one can add a hip-hop element to such an iconic image of history?
Replace The First President of The United States with RZA, the oarsmen with a couple of ninjas, and the brave flagmen with The GZA and Ol’ Dirty Bastard, and you’ll begin to get a clearer picture of the surprisingly fascinating creation by the renowned Wu-producer, entitled “Victory or Death.” What makes the painting so intriguing is the obvious and hidden Wu-Tang symbolism embedded throughout; from the flag with tiny Wu logos to unknown figures throwing up the Wu hand-sign from afar.

The painting has already begun to get acknowledgments from critics and news publications including a nod from Village Voice proclaiming that it’s “the greatest painting of 2010.” A far stretch considering it’s only the first month of 2010 but the painting is certainly a major staple in the world of hip-hop art and definitely worth checking out.
