The reason I suggested O get a grip (maybe a harsh choice of words) is that she clearly CAN write well, and therefore should hold herself to a higher standard in terms of subject matter and the claims she makes.

And yes, Don Cheadle calling his penis Adolf Hitler and using the word “kike” (last I checked the Jewish-American community doesn't typically invoke a double standard with this term as the blacks do with “nigger”), would definitely make me at least giggle.

So. Just to reiterate. O can express herself way too well to be going on pointless tirades like this. If you like the subject matter of casual racism in the United States (quite obviously a popular issue), I'm just saying find a legitimate transgression before you write the piece. One.

More importantly, if you are going to justify his statement, what's wrong with a writer formulating whatever opinion they want, right, wrong or indifferent?

In the writer's opinion, she feels that his statements infer that he is ignorant to how the world actually works, and correctly so, because they weren't really jokes. Jokes have a punchline. Jokes are meant to be funny. Even an edgy joke, no matter the content, is funny at some point. Even if he had chosen to use any other words, his further explanation makes no sense. Why would someone continue to elaborate, further, and further, digging himself a greater hole if he was just being “raw”?

There are plenty of comedians who are “raw” but have a point behind their humor. I think the real question is, what was the point of him being so “funny” to people who read playboy? At what cost was his “humor” to him? Because if it was really only a misguided attempt to make a joke…I just can't see why he would have extended it so far. He didn't even say “oh, I was misunderstood” or even feebly attempt to do something like that. No, he just said “I'm going to stop being so raw.” That's not really a worthwhile justification for saying in detail, the amount that he said.

Now I would like to respond to John who called your article “manic, nonsense and convoluted.” The thing about being a writer is that you are allowed to have an opinion on the subject at hand. If you think that John Mayer's comments to playboy especially using the work “nigger” were just jokes then I am not sure what time period you are living in. Personally I don't know John Mayer and after his comments I could careless if his career “sinks or swims”. Using the word nigger is not a joke! It was not a joke in 1852 when the United States Fugitive Slave Law was passed and Harriet Tubman helped guide runaway slaves further north to Canada. It was not a joke in 1955 when Emitt Till was brutally murdered for supposedly whistling at a white woman. The word nigger was not a joke when four days after Emitt was murdered Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus and helped spark the Montgomery Bus boycott where the work nigger was used by white officers releasing German Shepard's and fire hoses on African Americans fighting for their rights. The word nigger is not a joke in 2010 for the first time in history we have an African American president . Tell me something John (before you chose to tells someone to “get a grip” if they want to be taken seriously as a serious writer) would it be a joke if a Don Cheadle decided to use the word “kike” and refer to his penis as Adolf Hitler and then later laugh it off and say it was just a joke. Would you then think that was okay? What if Brad Pitt decided to use the term “gook” while discussing the Vietnam war, is that just a joke? Or how about the word “cracker” is that okay too? In my opinion I think that you are the one who needs to get a grip and realize that none of these terms are JUST JOKES, they portray segregation, slavery, rape, slaughter, sodomy, pain and suffering. Oneca my apologies for my long response but I felt that I needed to give a slight history lesson because apparently he NEEDED it. Please do not let ignorant comments discourage you from writing your opinion because I personally enjoy reading your blog.

I like that you are willing to stand up for John Mayer as if you are his personal advocate. Truth is, we really don't know the artists we claim to know…we know what they produce and hope to make money from. That said, John Mayer might not be a racist, but he very well might be one! Either way, he should be schooled on the appropriate language to use when referring to personal issue like race and class!

By the way, a joke is never a joke unless the person telling it believes a part of what he is saying is true….think on that! It explains why the joke might offend one listener (who is hurt by the “subtle truth” in the joke), and not the other (who believes that “not so subtle truth.”
